What Is the Right Diet for Hyperthyroidism?

  • 1

There is no specific hyperthyroidism diet but what you consume will make a difference. When there is too much of thyroid gland, you can’t prevent or treat the condition with diet alone. You need immediate doctor’s care and also approve his decision about the food options. Following are some of the food choices that you can change to improve your thyroid condition.

1. Berries

Berries are a great addition to your diet when you have thyroid issues. From blueberries to raspberries to strawberries, you can make your choices. Berries come with high antioxidant content and make your immune system strong. You must have a serving of berries every day for keeping your body healthy.

2. Cook food with Cruciferous Veggies

Much unlike hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism needs you to add cruciferous veggies in your diet. Broccoli is a part of goitrogen family, and they reduce the amount of thyroid hormone that your gland produces when it is hyperactive. Similar food of this kind is known as cruciferous. You can include kale, cabbage, and cauliflower, on the list. You should have at least one serving of these veggies every day.

3. Vitamin D or Omega 3

You need to consume vitamin D and omega 3 when you have a thyroid condition. Salmon is a good source of vitamin D, omega 3 and calcium for bone health. Your body doesn’t produce fatty acids naturally so you need to get it from food. You can consume eggs or mushrooms for substituting fishes. Flaxseed oil, olive oil, and walnuts are also great to add to this list.

4. Consume turkey

If you consume meat, opt for turkey instead of chicken or mutton. Turkey is great for protein content and muscle build. Hyperthyroidism commonly causes weight loss and if you don’t have protein you can fall in trouble. If you don’t consume meat, you can go for nuts and beans instead. These are rich in protein as well.

5. Add dairy to your diet

You need to consume lots of dairy products when you have hyperthyroidism. The condition tends to weaken your bones and lead to osteoporosis. To prevent it, you need to have about 3 servings of calcium every day and you will get that from dairy food like yogurt, milk, and cheese.

6. Other options

Some more options for hyperthyroidism food will include green juices from kale, spirulina or spinach. Whole food like fresh veggies and fruits must be added along with lean protein. You should avoid processed foods. Herbs like rosemary, basil and oregano have anti-inflammatory properties that help thyroid function, so they too must be added to the diet. You should also consume ginger that boosts immune functioning. Finally, bone broth can help detoxification and heal leaky gut problems.

These were the best changes that you can make your hyperthyroidism diet so that you can balance the way your gland works. You should ask your doctor before you make a proper diet so that he agrees to what you need in the diet and what you don’t.
